Late Winter Events in Bayfield
Late winter in Bayfield has a certain magic – the snow has been falling, the air is quiet – inspiring you to get outside and experience it all. It seems the secret is out, too, since February is host to some of the area’s premiere winter events.
Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race
The 24th Annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race takes place on Saturday and Sunday, February 2nd and 3rd. Sled dog teams from all over will trek through the local wooded trail systems on each of the two days – 10-dog teams will race 80 miles while 6-dog teams will travel over a 60-mile course. Check out the Family and Youth events too.
See your team off at the Echo Valley gravel pit and then cheer on their return at the start/finish line or find a spot along the route at one of the many spectator locations. Concessions, warming fires, and hot cocoa will be available at all locations, so be sure to bring the family and cheer on your favorite team.
In addition to the race itself, the annual Meet the Mushers spaghetti dinner will be hosted at the Lakeside Pavilion Friday, February 1st. Make it a weekend your family won’t soon forget!
Check the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Bureau official schedule for more details.
Finding Space Rocks on Antarctica
The Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race is also pleased to announce Stephen Ballou as its keynote speaker. At 7 PM on Saturday February 2nd, he’ll be sharing his experiences as a researcher hunting for meteorites in some of Antarctica’s harshest climates. The event is free as part of the race weekend, so be sure to catch it!
Trout Unlimited Fly-Tying Get Together
Is fly-tying more your speed? Want to hear fish stories and tie flies with the best of them? Head over to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center on Saturday, February 16th to do both with the local chapter of Trout Unlimited. This event is free and open to the public.
Last Sunday Free Community Pancake Breakfast
In the mood for pancakes? How about pancakes, sausage, apple sauce and coffee, for free? No donations will be accepted at Bethesda Church’s community pancake breakfast Sunday, February 24th. Stop by with the whole family – all are welcome!
